Day 1. New Orleans

On arrival in New Orleans this morning, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel.
Stay: Two Nights: The Roosevelt New Orleans

    Day 2. New Orleans

    After a Welcome Breakfast this morning, take a city tour of New Orleans, one of the most culturally and historically rich destinations in America. Visit such landmarks as Jackson Square, St Louis Cathedral, the Garden District and the French Quarter. You’ll also see where the levees broke during Hurricane Katrina and learn about the city’s efforts to recover from this disaster. Later, head for the nearby swampland, where a high-speed airboat adventure will take you skimming over the famous bayous and right up close to the native alligators. Tonight, dine at Antoine’s Restaurant, which has been serving delicious French-Creole cuisine in the heart of New Orleans since 1840.

    Day 3. New Orleans, Embark Mississippi River Cruise

    Today you’ll board your luxury small-ship paddle wheeler for the beginning of your cruise along one of America’s most famous rivers - the mighty Mississippi. After settling in to your Stateroom, this evening, head for the Dining Room and enjoy a Welcome Dinner.

    Day 4. Oak Alley

    Today you’ll dock right out the front of Oak Alley - a magnificent and historic mansion and plantation located in the community of Vacherie, Louisiana. After disembarking, wander under a 240-metre-long canopy of towering oak trees that were planted in the early 18th century. Enjoy a tour of the wonderfully restored Greek-revival-style antebellum mansion and its impressive grounds, including several reconstructed slave quarters. Afterwards, re-board your ship and continue north along the Mississippi River.

    Day 5. Baton Rouge, St Francisville

    This morning disembark in Baton Rouge, the capital of Louisiana. Here, you may like to join a local guide for a tour of the Old Louisiana State Capitol, a 160-year-old downtown statehouse that is now an interactive museum detailing the history of Baton Rouge and Louisiana. Alternatively, tour the Louisiana Culinary Institute and enjoy a cooking demonstration. Both groups will then re-board your ship for lunch. Later, in the small town of St Francisville, learn about the traditions and lifestyles of the Old South’s wealthiest inhabitants during a tour of the home and grounds at Rosedown Plantation. Afterwards, visit the charming store known as Grandmother’s Buttons, which has carved itself a unique niche by using antique buttons to create stunning items of jewellery. Then return to your ship and continue your cruise, heading for the section of the river that acts as the border between Louisiana and the state of Mississippi.

    Day 6. Natchez

    In the state of Mississippi on a bluff overlooking the river, Natchez was a wealthy and important city before the Civil War. On an Historic District Tour here today, you’ll visit Longwood Mansion, an octagonal house that was never completed due to the war. You’ll also see many of the city’s restored homes and buildings, including fine examples of antebellum architecture. Afterwards, perhaps head to the JN Stone House for a classical music concert and wine reception. Or learn about the life and times of early cotton planters at Frogmore Plantation - a working cotton farm.

    Day 7. Vicksburg

    As the site of a 47-day siege during the American Civil War, this morning’s port of call - Vicksburg, Mississippi - is simply bursting with history. Here today, explore the Vicksburg National Military Park, which commemorates the famous campaign, siege and defence of Vicksburg in 1863. Take a narrated coach tour of the battlefields then drop in to the visitor centre. Later, return to your ship and set out towards the city of Memphis.

    Day 8. Cruising the Mississippi River

    Take advantage of a full day on the river today, passing the sights of Arkansas on your left and Mississippi on your right. You might like to take part in some of the many activities, lectures and presentations being run, or simply relax in one of your ship’s comfortable public areas.

    Day 9. Memphis

    Disembark this morning in Memphis, Tennessee - the city that many consider to be the home of rock’n’roll. Here, take in the sights during a guided tour. Then, after lunch back on board, head to Graceland - the former home of Elvis Presley and today a National Historic Landmark. This evening, indulge in a Farewell Dinner.

    Day 10. Disembark Mississippi River Cruise, Memphis

    Disembark for the final time this morning and transfer to your charming hotel, where you may be fortunate enough to see the famous Peabody Duck March in the lobby. The entire day is then yours at leisure to further explore Memphis as you choose. Your APT Tour Director will be on hand to provide insight into the attractions that await in this beautiful riverside city.

    Day 11. Memphis, Franklin, Nashville

    Travel via the uniquely Southern town of Franklin to the capital of Tennessee, Nashville. Take a backstage tour at The Grand Ole Opry House, a must-see for visitors to the city. Here an iconic stage concert and radio broadcast is held each week, showcasing the biggest stars of country music. On air since 1925, The Grand Ole Opry is among the longest-running radio broadcasts in history. After a backstage tour here, enjoy a city tour and discover the places that have earned Nashville its reputation as the heartland of country music. This evening enjoy a special Country and Western Dinner.

    Day 12. Nashville, Washington DC

    This morning’s touring begins with a visit to The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which preserves the history and traditions of country music. Afterwards, enjoy a backstage tour of the Ryman Auditorium - home to The Grand Ole Opry show from 1943 to 1974. Learn about the era during which the theatre hosted legends such as Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline. Afterwards, you’ll transfer to the airport and farewell the state of Tennessee on your flight to Washington DC, the mighty US capital (flight not included). After checking in to your hotel, enjoy dinner this evening.

    Day 13. Washington DC

    On a guided sightseeing tour today, you’ll visit Arlington National Cemetery - a famous military resting place that was established during the American Civil War. You’ll also see the White House and visit the National Mall, home to such attractions as the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the new Martin Luther King Memorial and several war memorials - including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the National World War II Memorial. Following your tour, the remainder of the afternoon and evening is then yours to relax or perhaps further explore at your leisure.

    Day 14. Washington DC

    After breakfast, a guided sightseeing tour will take you to the United States Capitol building, the famous meeting place of the United States Congress. Afterwards, choose from a visit to the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History or the National Museum of Natural History - all of which are fascinating attractions run by the Smithsonian Institution. Afterwards, enjoy some time this afternoon to relax or further explore the city at your leisure. Later this evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at the famous Old Ebbitt Grill, a bar and restaurant located close to the White House. Established in 1856, the Old Ebbitt Grill has been a favourite haunt of many famous American Presidents including Theodore Roosevelt, and is still a popular meeting spot for political insiders, journalists and celebrities.

    Day 15. Lancaster, Philadelphia

    This morning, you’ll travel through the city of Baltimore in Maryland on the way into Pennsylvania Dutch Country in Lancaster County - also known as Amish Country. Here, join a local Amish guide and set off on a horse and buggy tour of the area. During the tour, you’ll gain a fascinating insight into the unique lifestyle of the Amish people, and observe the marked contrast of their way of living compared to the pace of modern 21st century life. Afterwards, continue on by coach to the nearby capital of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. On arrival here, settle in to your hotel before dinner this evening.

    Day 16. Philadelphia, Princeton, New York City

    During a sightseeing tour of this historic city this morning, you’ll visit a broad selection of Philadelphia’s major landmarks. Visit Independence National Historical Park - home to the iconic Liberty Bell as well as World Heritage-listed Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted in the late 18th century. Afterwards, you’ll travel into the state of New Jersey and on to Princeton University, one of the most prestigious education institutions in America. On a guided tour, enjoy a close-up look at this famous Ivy League university and its grounds, then continue on to arguably the most famous city in the world - New York. On arrival here, head for Midtown Manhattan - the perfect base from which to immerse yourself in the colour and excitement of the city. After checking in to your hotel, enjoy dinner this evening.

    Day 17. New York City

    During a guided tour of Manhattan this morning, take in landmarks such as Fifth Avenue, Times Square, Broadway’s Theatre District, the Lincoln Center, Greenwich Village, Soho, and the Financial District including Wall Street. You’ll also enjoy the chance to ride the Staten Island Ferry for a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty, the widely celebrated symbol of freedom and hope. Enjoy lunch at the well-known Katz’s Delicatessen then, in the afternoon, visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, a five-story brick building that was home to an estimated 7,000 people from over 20 nations between 1863 and 1935. Early this evening, head up to the Observation Deck at the top of the Rockefeller Center to take in some incredible views of the city at dusk.

    Day 18. New York City

    Today, perhaps explore the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the three largest art museums in the world. Alternatively, head to the Museum of Modern Art, considered to be among the most influential museums of its kind. Afterwards, you may like to take in a Broadway show (own expense). Alternatively, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to soak up the sights and sounds of New York. Perhaps explore the expansive gardens of Central Park; go shopping at the city’s famed department stores; make your way to Soho and discover its contemporary shops and art galleries; or wander New York’s varied neighbourhoods with their own international flavours, such as Chinatown and Little Italy. This evening, enjoy a Farewell Dinner and Drinks.

    Day 19. Depart New York City

    Your journey ends this morning as you’re transferred to the airport after breakfast for your onward flight.
