Itinerary

Day 1. Arrive Rome, Embark Cruise

Arrive Rome and be transferred to your luxurious vessel. Board the M/Y Variety Voyager and settle into your spacious suite. This evening, get to know your crew and fellow travellers at Welcome Drinks and Dinner.

Day 2. Sorrento, Capri

Sorrento is the perfect base for exploring the town of Pompeii. The once-thriving town was engulfed by lava erupting from nearby Mt Vesuvius in August of the year 79. Pompeii is an historically significant site that offers a unique, well-preserved insight into ancient Roman life. Visit nearby Herculaneum, a once-wealthy city that was similarly lost in the 79 Mt Vesuvius eruption. Then, visit the dazzling island of Capri, where medieval churches, elegant architecture, pretty mountainscapes and a chic town square lined with cafes and designer boutiques feature. Discover one of the most glamorous destinations in the Mediterranean. Visit the Villa San Michele, an ancient property built by Swedish physician Axel Munthe upon the ruins of one of the Tiberian palaces.

Day 3. Amalfi, Ravello, Positano, Salerno

Stretching from Positano to Vietri sul Mare, the enchanting World Heritage-listed Amalfi coast boasts truly stunning panoramas. Discover everything this beguiling region has to offer today. Admire the incomparable landscapes of the picturesque capital Amalfi, an enchanting town of alleys, steps and small white houses clinging onto rocks. A mix of history and nature abounds here, and the St Andrew Cathedral is well worth a visit. Continue to the enchanting ridge top village of Ravello, to see the many villas and churches that abound here. Explore the arresting beauty of Positano, a photographer’s paradise. Visit the impressive Roman ruins and admire the golden dome of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Discover the lively and attractive port city of Salerno, including the historical Old Town, complete with charming medieval winding streets. Today, wind your way along the sparkling coastal route, discovering a magnificent range of incredible destinations. Day 4. Lipari Islands

Just off the northeastern coast of Sicily stand the Lipari Islands. Formed as the result of volcanic eruptions, just seven of the seventeen islands here are inhabited. Admire the active volcanoes of Stromboli, discover spectacular beaches and absorb the stunning scenery today as your captain expertly selects the best places to explore amongst these delightful islands.

Day 5. Catania, Taormina, Sicily

This morning, tour Catania, Sicily’s second largest city. Catania lies on the eastern coast of Sicily in the Ionian Sea at the foot of Mt Etna. At several points in history, eruptions from Mt Etna have destroyed the city. Admire the stunning examples of Baroque architecture here, and perhaps sample some delicious Sicilian cuisine. Explore the delightful town square, the Piazza Duomo. Later, continue on to beautiful and enchanting Taormina for an enthralling city highlights tour. Visit the Greco-Roman amphitheatre with great views over Mt Etna, see the 13th century Cathedral of Saint Nicolò and the 14th century Palazzo Corvaja. Soak up the enchanting atmosphere in the quaint Old Town.

Day 6. Syracuse, Sicily

Today, land at Syracuse, a city that once rivalled Athens as the largest and most beautiful city in the Greek world. Home to truly stunning examples of Greek and Roman architecture, World Heritage-listed Syracuse is also the birthplace of Greek mathematician Archimedes. Our exciting exploration begins this morning with a visit to the Archaeological Zone. Admire the well-preserved Greek Theatre that dates back to the 5th Century BC and is still used today. Later, discover the impressive Temple of Apollo and the vibrant pedestrian square, the Piazza del Duomo.

Day 7. Otranto, Castro, Vaste

Visit several quaint coastal towns and an ancient Italian village today. See Messapian walls, Aragonese castles and Byzantine frescoes as we explore the alluring towns of Otranto, Castro and Vaste. Otranto was the main port of Italy to the Orient for 1,000 years and it was here that St Peter allegedly celebrated the first western mass. Otranto is also home to the bloody ‘Sack of Otranto’ of 1480. See the town’s namesake castle in Castro, perched high atop a hill overlooking the turquoise sea below. Explore Vaste, a striking and unspoilt paradise town. Here, discover the imposing Palazza d’Avalos, home to a civic museum and an art gallery, and the cathedral of San Giuseppe.

Day 8. Monopoli

Monopoli boasts endless stretches of sandy beach, and a vast and beautiful countryside, framed by clear blue seas. Olive production, orchards and almond trees are the main industry here. More than just an attractive port, Monopoli has a fascinating history and Roman and Bronze Age settlements can be viewed here. From the port of Monopoli, discover the white-washed trulli houses of Puglia on a half-day excursion to the World Heritage-listed town of Alberobello. See the impressive 15th century buildings in the Aia Piccola and visit the Basilica Minore Dei Santi Medeci and the medieval Casa D’Amore. The latter was the first trullo to be built in 1797 and now provides an attractive setting for the tourist information centre.

Day 9. Ancona, San Marino

From Ancona, embark on a fascinating day tour to San Marino, the oldest sovereign state and constitutional republic on Earth. A World Heritage-listed site since 2008, San Marino is perched high above sea level on Mt Titano. After the Vatican City and Monaco, San Marino is the third smallest state in all of Europe. Enjoy lunch at celebrated chef Luigi Sartini’s Michelin star Ristorante Righi.

Day 10. Emilia-Romagna

Discover the enticing region of Emilia-Romagna today, which is often referred to as ‘Italy’s Food Basket’. Emilia-Romagna is the home of Prosciutto di Parma, Parmigiano-Reggano and balsamic vinegar. Its favourable coastal climate has resulted in some of the most fertile soils in all of Italy. Today, APT guests will be treated to a dream gourmet tasting tour of the local farms and factories. Meet the producers of these gourmet delights and enjoy lunch and a wine tasting. As we set sail late tonight, perhaps take the opportunity to enjoy an evening ashore.

Day 11. Disembark Ship, Venice

Variety Voyager

Arranged over three decks, all suites on board the Variety Voyager boast marble ensuites, complete with luxurious bathrobes and deluxe toiletries. APT guests will enjoy the added convenience of individually controlled air conditioning, a mini fridge, and a safety deposit box. A state-of-the-art flat screen television and DVD player also feature in each suite.
