Enjoy strolling along the promenade and seeing the cantilevered Chinese Fishing Nets brought to the region by Chinese fishermen in the 14th Century. Later stroll through the history-filled streets of Jewtown, before visiting the ornate Paradesi Synagogue. Head to St Francis Church, built in 1516 and learn about the fascinating colonial history that dates back to 1503 spanning first Portuguese, then Dutch and finally British rule before Indian independence in 1947. Next, enjoy lunch at the Brunton Boatyard Hotel. Later, delight in a traditional Kathakali dance performance.

In the afternoon transfer to the airport for your flight to Mumbai, a city considered to be the most modern in India. Set out on a tour of Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. Visit the India Gate, a monument overlooking the Arabian Sea that was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Later transfer to the World Heritage-listed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and board the Deccan Odyssey for Welcome Drinks. Enjoy free time to explore the train and dinner on board before an overnight journey, waking in Vadodara.

After breakfast alight your train to explore the World-Heritage listed Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park, the only Islamic pre-Mughal city in India that remains unchanged. Wake up to breakfast overlooking the Aravali ranges as you roll into Udaipur. Today join a guided tour including the elaborate City Palace standing on the east bank of Lake Pichola. Enjoy a boat ride on the lake before lunch back aboard your train. This afternoon explore the Old Town by foot, a perfect opportunity to purchase unique handicrafts from the market.

This morning you are spoilt for choice in Jodhpur, the Sun City of Rajasthan. The former capital of the Marwar kingdom, is a beautiful city with the Thar Desert as an epic backdrop. Jodhpur houses some amazing temples, forts and palaces which you will be given the opportunity to see. Visit the Bishnoi tribal village to see traditional potters and weavers at work. After lunch prepare to explore the mighty Mehrangarh Fort set on a rocky hill that rises 400 feet above the surrounding plain. Explore one of India’s largest forts, including the fascinating museum that houses royal palanquins, armoury, paintings, costumes, personal belongings of the family of Rao Jodha who built this impressive fort in 1459. Your walking tour takes you to the Turban Gallery and past the Old Clock Tower market and striking havelis. Dinner tonight is a royal affair, a Marwar barbecue held in the maharajah courtyard at the fort.

This morning, experience the rich culture and lingering colonial influence of Kolkata on an early morning tour. See well-preserved British colonial buildings including the General Post Office, High Court, Raj Bhawan, Town Hall, Treasury Building, Reserve Bank of India and Dalhousie Square. Continue to St John’s church and see the oldest functioning pipe organ in India, then visit the Victoria Memorial Museum. After lunch on board, journey upstream along the Lower Ganges. Later today, visit the 19th-century Hooghly Imambara, a famous pilgrimage centre in West Bengal.

This morning, make an excursion to Matiari. Here, you’ll enjoy the opportunity to peruse beautiful cooking instruments crafted from recycled copper and brass. Afterwards, continue cruising upstream along the Lower Ganges, passing the site of The Battle of Plassey. Learn how the British East India Company recorded a victory here in 1757, helping establish the company rule in Bengal and much of India.

Disembark in Khushbagh, and pass through local farmers’ fields to the tomb of the last Nawab of Bengal. Back on board, enjoy the afternoon at leisure. After a tour of the palace, visit the 18th-century Katra Mosque, and learn about the Mohammedan rulers. Later, cruise to the sleepy village of Baranagar. Enjoy a restful morning before a visit to the village of Mayapur, a holy site believed to be the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, regarded as the incarnation of Krishna. It is the headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) movement and is visited by over a million pilgrims every year. Here you’ll learn about the Hari Krishna community and culture, and view the construction of the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium.

On a cruise along the Ganges float pastthe burning ghats (steps) where ceremonial cremations are carried out in the ancient, traditional way. Then, on a guided tour explore the Old City of Varanasi. Here, colourful dwellings sprout from the banks of the Ganges as local villagers, traders and merchants still gather on the steps of the river bank just as their ancestors did. In Varanasi, you’ll gain an insight into the spiritual heart of modern-day India. Hear how it is believed that Buddha founded Buddhism here around 528 BC when he gave his first sermon. You’ll also visit a number of temples, including the Durga Mandir and Banaras Hindu University. Later today, enjoy an evening prayer cruise along the Ganges, and see a spectacular fire-lit Aarti ceremony.
