On arrival in Mandalay, Myanmar’s last royal capital, you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to the Irrawaddy River. Here, board your luxury river ship, the RV Samatha, for the start of your incredible 14-night Irrawaddy River cruise. Visit the U Bein Bridge near Amarapura. Thought to be the world’s oldest and longest teak-wood bridge, U Bein spans 1.2 kilometres across Taungthaman Lake. It is a supremely beautiful sight, particularly during the early evening when the sun is beginning to set.


Set out on a full-day tour of Mandalay, including Mahamuni Buddha Temple and the Kuthodaw Pagoda. Later, take in a tour of the Shwenandaw Monastery.

Depart the ship by coach to visit Sagaing, here you will visit the Soon Oo Pon Nya Shin Pagoda. Enjoy the view over the Irrawaddy River and also visit a Silversmith workshop for an insight into this craft. Later continue on to Inwa by horse-drawn cart, taking in Maha Aung Mye Bon Zan Monastery and the teak-wood Bagaya Monastery.

Your ship will arrive today in Yandabo, a charming village known for its finely crafted terracotta wares. Here, disembark and enjoy an intimate look at village life and attend a pottery-making demonstration by local artisans. Later, re-board your river ship and take in the scenery as you continue cruising onwards to mystical Bagan. As you meander along this section of the Irrawaddy River, the beauty of this country becomes apparent. Watch on as you pass lush green vegetation, fishermen casting their nets and homes that sit close to the riverbank. During this beautiful, breathtaking experience, enjoy free flowing drinks, delicious canapés, and fantastic hospitality with your fellow guests.

This morning, the RV Samatha’s Sun Deck offers a sublime vantage point from which to capture a glimpse of Bagan at sunrise. Enjoy a hearty breakfast before disembarking your ship and selecting your Freedom of Choice activity for the day. Later, visit a family-run lacquerware workshop and a nearby village.

Enjoy one final sunrise over Bagan before cruising onwards to Tantkyi. Here, you’ll be given time to visit the Tantkyitaung Pagoda, encircled by 32 elephant statues facing in all directions. On returning to your ship, you’ll cruise to the small village of Salay, a colourful religious centre. Here, you’ll visit Yoke Sone Kyaung, the region’s oldest surviving wooden monastery. Built in 1882, the monastery is famous for its wood carvings and extensive collection of religious artefacts. Afterwards, continue on to Shinbin Maha Laba Man Paya, home to the country’s largest lacquer Buddha image, which dates back to the 13th century.

On arrival, disembark your ship and head up to the Mya Tha Lun Pagoda, located atop a hill overlooking the Irrawaddy River. Take in the fabulous views and explore the pagoda, constructed with thousands of solid gold bricks and home to numerous shrines devoted to a variety of nat spirits.

Today you’ll arrive in Minhla, the site of a significant battle during the Third Anglo-Burmese War. Here, visit the Minhla Fort, built by Italian engineers in 1860 to keep British forces out of Burma. Learn how the British captured this historic fort, and indeed the town, during a war that saw an independent Burma lose its sovereignty. After your discovery, continue on to Thayetmyo, a pleasant port town that once sat on the border between Upper and Lower Burma, which the British annexed during the Second Anglo-Burmese War. Here, enjoy a fascinating tour of the historic colonial-era post office before taking a swing at Myanmar’s first golf course.

On arrival in Pyay, you’ll disembark for a walking tour. Established by the British Irrawaddy Flotilla Company in the late 19th century, Pyay originally served as a transshipment point for cargo being moved between Upper and Lower Myanmar. See a selection of pagodas, including the imposing Shwesandaw Pagoda, one of the country’s most revered religious sites. Later, travel eight kilometres to the south-east of Pyay on an excursion to the ancient ruins at the old Pyu kingdom capital, Sri Ksetra, meaning ‘City of Splendour’. Added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, the region’s 1,500 year old stupas are among the world’s earliest Buddhist monuments.

As your ship departs Pyay this morning, absorb wonderful views of the Akauk Mountains and their river-facing cliff carvings as you cruise onwards to the quiet riverside township of Myanaung. Here, a walking tour will take you past a range of well-preserved colonial houses and on to the bustling local market.

Today you’ll explore the township of Danuphyu, where the revered General Maha Bandula led a famous Burmese defensive against the British troops during the First Anglo-Burmese War. You’ll also visit a local cheroot (cigar) workshop.

Disembark for a morning cruise and walking tour of Maubin, a riverside town home to a number of universities and Buddhist pagodas. Afterwards, set off for Yangon, Myanmar’s most important commercial centre. This afternoon, enjoy a tour of the Shwedagon Pagoda, a 99 metre-high gilded pagoda and stupa that dominates the city skyline from atop Singuttara Hill. This spectacular pagoda is around 2,500 years old and emits a golden glow thanks to an outer layer consisting of gold-leaf and thousands of diamonds. It is said to be encrusted in more gold than is held in all the vaults of the Bank of England, and was constructed to protect several hairs from the Buddha’s head. A true wonder of the religious world, the Shwedagon Pagoda is a repository of the best in Myanmar’s heritage – architecture, sculpture and arts.

Join a walking tour of Yangon and stroll through the historic streets of Chinatown, the Indian Quarter and downtown Yangon.


Formally known as Rangoon, a mix of colonial architecture, modern high-rises and glistening Buddhist pagodas define the city of Yangon. After breakfast, select your Freedom of Choice activity. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure. This evening, enjoy a Farewell Dinner.

Disembark the RV Samatha for the final time today in Yangon and transfer to the airport for your flight to Heho, gateway to Inle Lake. Be met by your guide on arrival and set off to explore a local family-run workshop famous for making Shan paper. Stemming from the fibre of the mulberry tree, this paper is very well-known in Myanmar. Afterwards, drive to the small town of Nyaung Shwe to check into your hotel. To end a wonderful day’s touring, stop in at the Red Mountain Estate Vineyards and Winery for a tour of the vineyard.

Today you’ll visit Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, which its shrines have since been covered with that many gold leaves that it is impossible to see its original structure, and the famous Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery (also known as the ‘Jumping Cat Monastery’), where for centuries monks have trained cats to jump through hoops. This afternoon, set off on a tour of a local silk and lotus weaving factory.

Explore the southern section of Inle Lake by boat. Take in the floating gardens and see the iconic one-legged rowing technique used by local fishermen. Visit Indein, one of the small villages on Inle Lake where a group of Buddhist pagodas known as the Shwe Indein Pagoda can be seen. Below the stupa are a cluster of hundreds of ancient stupas, most overgrown with bushes. In the afternoon, stop in at a local silver smith workshop, before meeting with Padaung Tribes.
