Board the Rocky Mountaineer and relax in the comfort of GoldLeaf Service as you set out into the mountains aboard one of the only passenger trains that covers this historic region of Canada. With a glass of sparkling wine in hand, gaze up at the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains and pass the waters of Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Canyon. Glide past steep rocky slopes as your train follows the Thompson River on the way to Kamloops where you will stay for the night.

Your rail journey continues east towards the Canadian Rockies. Travel through vast ranchlands, past Kinbasket Lake and alongside the shores of Kicking Horse River. Wind through the Spiral Tunnels, a Swiss engineering marvel first opened in 1909, and cross the Continental Divide of the Americas into the province of Alberta. Gliding between the emerald pines and jagged peaks of Banff National Park, including towering Castle Mountain, it’s not long before you’ll arrive at Lake Louise. Here, disembark your train and make your way to the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

Join Highway 93, otherwise known as the Icefields Parkway, and wind along one of the world’s most scenic stretches of road. After pausing to take in Peyto Lake, make a stop at the giant Columbia Icefield. Here, you’ll board a specially designed Ice Explorer vehicle and journey right onto the Athabasca Glacier. Continue on via Athabasca Falls to Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, situated on the shores of pristine Lac Beauvert.

Step back aboard the Rocky Mountaineer today and settle in to your glass-dome GoldLeaf Service carriage. This section of the famed railway takes you through the historic gold rush region of British Columbia. You’ll glide beneath Mt Robson, also known as ‘The Great White Fright’, then journey past Yellowhead Pass, Moose Lake and the Fraser River to the ‘Gold Pan City’ of Quesnel. During a free evening, perhaps stroll along the waterfront which is lined with a collection of heritage buildings.

Rejoin your train this morning in time for breakfast as a golden morning glow is cast over the landscapes of the Cariboo region. Continue along the historic route of early gold rush pioneers, taking in views of the Fraser Canyon before crossing Deep Creek Bridge, one of the highest railway bridges in the world. Sweep along the shores of Seton Lake and Anderson Lake before arriving in Whistler.

Rise to a full day in Vancouver, a cosmopolitan city ringed by ice-capped mountain peaks. Your day begins with a guided tour, during which you’ll visit Stanley Park, a world-class, 400-hectare evergreen oasis located just steps away from downtown Vancouver. Then head to Granville Island, the bustling heart of Vancouver’s cultural scene. Here, wander amid the colourful public market. You’ll also see picturesque English Bay and Vancouver Harbour, before enjoying the afternoon at your leisure. Perhaps use your free time to experience the atmosphere of Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, or visit the shopping mecca of Robson Street. You might like to admire the beauty of Queen Elizabeth Park. This evening, as the land portion of your tour draws to an end, meet your fellow travellers for a special group dinner.

Enjoy a full day at sea as your ship cruises along coastal British Columbia and the Alaska Panhandle. As you pass Vancouver Island defined by mountains and verdant forests, look for pods of orcas and humpback whales. Glide past rocky headlands and over the icy waters of the Inside Passage, one of the most picturesque sea lanes in the world, and one of the few where deep-draft vessels can sail close to steep mountain walls. Throughout the day, keep your eyes on the shoreline for local wildlife. You may spy moose and brown bears amongst the forested banks.

Spend a relaxing morning on board your ship, taking in soaring cliffs and glaciers as you continue your journey north. Perhaps join a lecture or presentation, or linger over a cup of coffee or tea. Here, you may explore at leisure, or set off on one of the exciting excursions available to you (own expense).

Reach the Inside Passage’s northernmost point, Skagway. Once a gateway city for the Klondike Gold Rush, Skagway’s frontier-style atmosphere remains evident today, with many of its colourful heritage buildings now protected as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Here, a variety of excursions are on offer (own expense). Or, wander past the false-front buildings in the downtown district as you explore at your own pace.

Draw back your curtains to World Heritage-listed Glacier Bay National Park, with its rivers of ice and peaks that nudge the sky. As you cruise you’ll benefit from commentary from local rangers who have come aboard your ship. Keep watch for whales, which are known to grace these waters frequently, as well as harbor seals and sea otters bobbing above the water. Look up as you may even spot bald eagles circling overhead.

A cheerful town set on the shores of the Tongass Narrows, Ketchikan and its surrounds present a range of attractions, including Misty Fjords National Monument - one of America’s largest wilderness areas, with glacial valleys and frosted peaks where wildlife roam in abundance. Thanks to its waterways which are teeming with salmon, the town is known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’. Disembark and spend the day exploring as you please.
