Arrive in Ulan Ude, located approximately 100 kilometres south east of Lake Baikal on the Uda River. Embark on an exploration of the Old Believers Village, where you’ll learn about the culture and history of the local people. Today, absorb the grandeur of Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake, holding 20 percent of the world’s fresh water. It is home to a unique breed of freshwater seals and over 50 species of fish. For five hours you wind your way through tunnels along cliff hugging tracks above the lake as your train is pulled by an authentic Soviet steam locomotive. Disembark and travel by boat to the village of Listvyanka, where you can learn about the lake’s flora and fauna at the Lake Baikal Museum and Aquarium. Weather permitting, enjoy a BBQ of smoked Omul fish prepared on the shores of Lake Baikal, a local delicacy. Or, take a hillside hike for spectacular views. Arrive today in Irkutsk and take a guided tour and admire the city’s distinctive wooden architecture. Visit the Volkonsky House Museum, which is dedicated to the memory of the aristocrats who were exiled to this remote outpost after the failed Decembrists uprising of 1825. Enjoy a champagne reception and private performance, reminiscent of those once enjoyed by aristocrats in the 19th century. Later, you can choose to take part in a fun Russian cooking class and cook your own lunch.
