Today, embark on a city tour and see the Red Square. Here, you’ll also see the brightly coloured domes of one of Russia’s most recognised structures, St Basil’s Cathedral. Or visit Tretyakov Gallery. Later, transfer to Kazansky Station and enjoy a Champagne Reception in the Imperial Room before boarding the Golden Eagle for your marvellous Trans-Siberian rail journey.

Arrive at your first stop, the picturesque and historic city of Kazan. Situated on the River Volga, this capital of Tatarstan is the birthplace of one of Russia’s most famous opera singers, Feodor Chaliapin. Here, you will have the opportunity to see the city's rich tapestry of culture on a guided tour. Explore a selection of the city’s major sights, including the spectacular World Heritage-listed Kremlin Fortress, the oldest surviving Tartar fortress in Russia. You’ll go behind the walls of this ancient citadel to explore the beautiful mosque and the onion-domed cathedral. Re-board your train for a delicious dinner later this evening.

Yekaterinburg is the capital of the Urals and was founded in 1723 by Peter the Great. Disembark and perhaps take a city tour, then visit the Church Upon the Blood, the site where Tsar Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, was executed with his family in 1918. Alternatively, explore the Museum of Military History, home of the downed American U-2 spy plane, and look at the Cold War through Soviet eyes.

Disembark in Novosibirsk for a tour that takes you to Lenin Square, which houses the incredible Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. An architectural marvel that’s one of the largest opera houses in the world, it houses two permanent ballet and opera companies. In front of the opera house is a statue of the famous Russian leader, Vladimir Lenin, which provides the perfect photographic opportunity.

Today, absorb the grandeur of Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake, as your train is pulled by an authentic Soviet steam locomotive. Delight in the romance of rail travel as you wind through tunnels and along cliff-side tracks overlooking the lake. Disembark and travel by boat to the village of Listvyanka, where you may wish to learn about the lake’s flora and fauna at the Baikal Limnological Museum. Or, take a hillside hike for spectacular views. Re-board your train and, weather permitting, stop on the shores of Lake Baikal where you’ll enjoy a BBQ of smoked Omul fish, a local delicacy. You may be brave and even choose to dive in for an invigorating swim.
