For those more inclined towards art and design, the Gayer Anderson Museum displays a patchwork of Islamic form and style.


An Aladdin’s cave of Egypt’s most famous artefacts are all housed within the ornate walls of Cairo’s Egyptian Museum. Come face to face with the reverent beauty of Tutankhamen’s gold mask and be humbled by the immortal inhabitants of the royal mummy rooms. After lunch, choose your Freedom of Choice experience. Bid a temporary farewell to Cairo to continue your explorations down river. Your flight follows the course of the Nile southwards to the East Bank city of Luxor, where your river ship is docked and waiting. After settling in and enjoying lunch on board, perhaps venture out to explore. This area has been home to three different religions over the centuries and temples to each are still standing on the riverbank. The dedication to faith of Luxor’s earliest residents is revealed at the fascinating ancient archaeological sites of Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple.

You’ll be tempted to wake early this morning to witness an authentic Egyptian dawn as the rising sun casts a shimmering glow on the Nile. On the West Bank and the Valley of the Kings, you’ll explore tombs constructed for notable pharaohs including Tutankhamun and Ramesses VI. Later, visit the magnificent memorial temple of Medinet Habu and the massive stone Colossus of Memnon. Back on board this afternoon, enjoy time to relax as your ship sails on to the ancient city of Essna, crossing the Essna lock.

The modern world of engineering feats is revealed today with a visit to Aswan High Dam. The biggest in Egypt, the dam collects water from Lake Nasser, one of the world’s largest artificial lakes. Later, immerse yourself back in ancient times on the charming island of Agilika and pay homage to the goddess Isis at the relocated Philae Temple. To discover more about this region and its culture and traditions, a motor boat can take you to visit the impressive Nubian Museum complex, located on a towering clifftop.

Your Nile cruise draws to a close this morning, docking in the laid-back southern city of Aswan. Here the river is dotted with picturesque islands and crisscrossed by the sweeping sails of feluccas. Kitchener’s Island on the eastern bank is home to Aswan’s Botanical Gardens. The entire island is dedicated to lush plantings of native and exotic species including rare Egyptian palms. You’ll be looking forward to checking-in to tonight’s accommodation, the legendary Old Cataract Hotel. The grounds of this restored 19th century Victorian Palace, set between the pink-granite of the edge of the desert and a magnificent blue-expanse of the Nile is the perfect place to watch the sunset.

This morning a short flight takes you across the Nubian desert to the town of Abu Simbel. Here, carved into a soaring mountainside, you’ll discover the World Heritage-Listed temples dedicated to Ramesses II and his beloved Nefertari which date back to the 13th century BC. Later, arrive back in Cairo, where this evening you’ll be treated to the spectacular Sound and Light show projected onto the pyramids.

An incredible salute to all things Egyptian will be enjoyed today. At the Giza pyramid complex, the known intricacies of the oldest remaining Seven Wonders of the World will be revealed. You’ll be able to touch and explore the Great Pyramid of Giza and get incredible views of the Sphinx. Later, wander through the ruins of Memphis, the ancient capital and Sakkara, an early burial site, and see the world’s oldest stone pyramid. After an impressive day seeing these magnificent sites, we finish our Egyptian adventure with a farewell dinner tonight.
