Visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Get up close to the giant panda and learn about the breeding program that has been set up to protect this species. With an astounding elevation level of 3,650 metres, you'll wake this morning to a place where the sky seems almost close enough to reach up and touch. Lhasa is deemed a holy land by Tibetan Buddhists, and today you will visit the city's most revered and sacred sites. Explore the World Heritage-listed site of Potala Palace. This magnificent religious complex contains over 200,000 precious statues and 10,000 alters - it is a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. Afterwards, you'll visit Jokhang Temple. This morning, your ship will enter Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most dramatic of the Three Gorges. Enjoy breakfast on board, before continuing to Wu Gorge, noted for its sheer peaks and soaring cliff faces. Later, disembark your ship at Badong and transfer by ferry to a traditional Chinese sampan (longboat). As you cruise on this longboat, poled by a local Tujia boatman, you are able to absorb the tranquillity of the area while taking in the undisturbed beauty of the rich surrounding forest and towering rock formations. Arrive at a local riverside village for a glimpse of traditional, rural Chinese life. See the local farms and tracker huts, and the ancient artefacts and customs still used today by the villagers. After lunch on board, explore the largest of the three gorges, Xiling Gorge. This immense section of the Yangtze makes up almost half of the entire length of the river.
