Your sightseeing begins today with a tour of Tiananmen Square. Enlarged to four times its original size in the 1950s, Tiananmen is the world’s largest city square. After the tour, you'll head to the World Heritage-listed Forbidden City, the largest surviving palace complex on earth. Following lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy time this afternoon at leisure.  This evening, indulge in an authentic Peking Duck banquet for dinner, served with all the traditional accompaniments.

Today, set out for the iconic Great Wall of China, its immense length winding its way from the Yellow Sea up into the Gobi Desert for more than 6,000 kilometres. Be captivated by the magnitude of this 8th-century monument as you wander along an unrestored and rarely visited stretch of the Badaling section, which is also the most complete section of the wall. This evening, explore the city at your own pace and discover the plethora of dining options (own expense).

This morning, visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Xi'an's most iconic landmark. Here you will find the best example of a Tang-style pagoda with its square formation. Visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Get up close to the giant panda and learn about the breeding program that has been set up to protect this species. It’s estimated that there are 1,500 to 2,000 giant pandas left in the world, with around 80 per cent of those in the Sichuan Province.


Today, delight in a unique Signature Experience. After lunch, visit Jinli Old Street, one of China's oldest commercial streets. While Jinli provides a window into China’s past, it also offers a diverse blend of ancient and modern China.

This morning, head to the airport for your flight to the Tibetan city of Lhasa. Translating to 'Place of the Gods', Lhasa is the spiritual hub of the Tibetan Buddhist world. You'll have the remainder of the day to acclimatise to one of the world's highest cities, explore at your own pace, or perhaps take the included shuttle to Barkhor Bazaar market. The bazaar is the largest shopping area in Tibet, where trinkets, souvenirs, fresh food, prayer flags, silver jewellery and more can be purchased. It is also a fascinating area for people watching. Simply stop and watch as daily life unfolds before your eyes. This evening, enjoy delicious dining at your hotel.

With an astounding elevation level of 3,650 metres, you'll wake this morning to a place where the sky seems almost close enough to reach up and touch. Lhasa is deemed a holy land by Tibetan Buddhists, and today you will visit the city's most revered and sacred sites. Explore the World Heritage-listed site of Potala Palace. This magnificent religious complex contains over 200,000 precious statues and 10,000 alters - it is a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. Afterwards, you'll visit Jokhang Temple. Built in the 7th century, the temple is considered the holiest place in Tibet. After lunch, arrive at the Barkhor Bazaar market and visit the stalls you have yet to discover. This evening, set out into the city to explore at your own pace and scope the local dining options that are on offer.

After breakfast, head to Norbulinka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lama. This World Heritage-listed site has now been opened to the masses as a public garden. Its name can be translated from Tibetan to mean 'Treasure Garden' and as you wander the tranquil grounds and beautifully kept gardens, it's easy to understand why it's named this way. Following lunch, visit the Sera Monastery and witness a debate on Buddhist doctrines between monks.

Bid farewell to Tibet as you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Chongqing. Upon arrival, enjoy a tour of the city and discover the sights and hidden gems of Chongqing, a former walled-fortress city with a history that dates back to the Ba kingdom. This afternoon, board your luxury river ship.

Rise early to participate in a Tai Chi class atop the ship’s Observation Deck for a relaxing start to your day. Following breakfast, disembark in Fuling, a sleepy town along the Yangtze. Here, enjoy the extraordinary chance to visit the 816 Underground Project, an old nuclear site hidden in the mountains. Constructed in the 1960s when political tensions between the world's superpowers were at their height, this immense nuclear installation spans almost 12 miles, with more than 130 man-made roads and tunnels. This unique opportunity to explore the project affords a deeper insight into China's military and political history. In the afternoon, choose from a range of activities. Perhaps attend a Chinese brush painting and calligraphy demonstration, learn how to play the ancient game of Mahjong, learn a few words of Mandarin, or take in a dumpling making session run by the ship’s chef. Tonight, enjoy a Captain's Welcome Reception.

This morning, your ship will enter Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most dramatic of the Three Gorges. Enjoy breakfast on board, before continuing to Wu Gorge, noted for its sheer peaks and soaring cliff faces. Later, disembark your ship at Badong and transfer by ferry to a traditional Chinese sampan (longboat). As you cruise on this longboat, poled by a local Tujia boatman, you are able to absorb the tranquillity of the area while taking in the undisturbed beauty of the rich surrounding forest and towering rock formations. Arrive at a local riverside village for a glimpse of traditional, rural Chinese life. See the local farms and tracker huts, and the ancient artefacts and customs still used today by the villagers. After lunch on board, explore the largest of the three gorges, Xiling Gorge. This immense section of the Yangtze makes up almost half of the entire length of the river. Tonight, relish in a traditional Chinese Banquet Farewell Dinner and say goodbye to your Captain and onboard staff.

After breakfast on board, take in a final Yangtze River photo opportunity at the Dam Site before disembarking your ship. Be transferred to the airport and fly to Shanghai. On arrival, board the high-speed Maglev train into the city and watch the onboard speedometer race towards an exhilarating 300 kilometres per hour. Check-in to your hotel overlooking the Huangpu River. From Jesuit cathedrals, Jewish synagogues and Buddhist temples to home-grown lòngtáng laneways and shíkùmén housing, with time at leisure, lift the lid to a treasure chest of architectural style in Shanghai. In the evening, choose where to dine.

Your final option is a full day excursion to Jinxi, an ancient water town. Although only an hour from bustling Shanghai, Jinxi is worlds away in pace and serenity. Wandering through the covered corridors along the Jinxi River, you’ll discover ancient bridges arching over the town’s many water alleys.
