Completed in 1995, the church is distinguishable by its recently laid gold domes that shine brilliantly in the sun. As your ship sails towards Tyuleniy Island this morning, take in a fascinating lecture which informs you on all you need to know about this tiny island. The name of this island translates to 'seal' in Russian, and it is easy to see why. On approaching Tyuleniy, the first impression of the island may be that the entire surface of its shore is alive, writhing with movement. Perfectly timed so that you'll visit at the height of breeding season, every inch of the beach is carpeted with various mammals. Hear the cacophony of barking, chirping and whistling of the thousands of animals which reside here. During the summer months, the island is home to a plethora of Steller sea lions, which thunder ashore with the sole purpose of breeding in mind. The Kuril Islands are made up of a volcanic archipelago stretching over 1,300 kilometres. Your time in the Kuril Islands on days 7-10 are flexible, as your Captain and Expedition Leader will plan landings based on weather and sea conditions. Uncover the stunning and exclusive Yankicha Island, a sinking volcanic caldera only accessible by Zodiac during high tide. Inside the caldera's walls, discover a tranquil blue lagoon and bubbling hot springs. Visit Matua Island, home to the Kuril Island's most active volcanoes, with more than 14 documented eruptions in the past 250 years. This morning you will awake to the picturesque landscapes of Listvenichnaya Bay, with its pebbled beaches and soaring mountains that are carpeted in lush greenery. Your ship's Zodiacs are the perfect vantage point to scout the incredible coastline. Head back to your ship and enjoy lunch, during which you will sail the short distance to Cape Kekurnyy, an island which serves as a haven for Steller sea lions. Board your Zodiac and enjoy an up-close glimpse at these truly impressive giants.
Your time on the Kamchatka Peninsula continues in Kamenistaya Bay, located within the Kronotsky State Nature Reserve. Established in 1934 and covering an area of almost 11,000 square kilometres, it is only very recently that the reserve has been open to travellers, as previously it had been under strict protection laws to preserve the natural environment. The reserve is home to pristine forest, tundra, mountains, volcanoes and abundant wildlife. The reserve showcases some of the best natural wonders the area has to offer. Arrive at the Commander Islands, where craggy mountains rise from an ocean which laps at remote and quiet beaches. Weather permitting, you will arrive in Nikolskoye, a tiny fishing village on Bering Island. Here you'll visit a small museum which celebrates Aleut culture. The Aleuts are the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands, a chain of volcanic islands divided between the United States and Russia. See the exhibition of Aleut art, traditional dress, weapons and basket weaving. Hear about the well-known carved work by the Aleuts, which are distinguishable by region. See the handmade traditional masks carved from driftwood, which often portrays figures from ancient myths and oral history. Afterwards, enjoy a Signature Experience. Referred to as the scientific and cultural epicentre of the region, you'll have the chance to visit the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, the art school, the gold-domed Orthodox cathedral and the bustling marketplace.
