Enjoy a leisurely morning at sea before arriving at Madang. The Madang township, referred to as the ‘prettiest town in the South Pacific,’ is surrounded by rugged mountains, offshore volcanic islands, springy ferns and soaring coconut trees. The island harbours a harrowing recent history. As the centre of heavy fighting during World War II, the town needed to be rebuilt after it was almost completely destroyed. As a result of this, today there are 34 sunken-ship dive sites that can be explored. This morning, a sightseeing tour takes you to the Catholic Mission and Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse. This working lighthouse is a memorial erected in honour of the Australian soldiers and the local volunteers who served as spies for the Allies during the Second World War. Afterwards, you will also visit a local market and have the chance to wander amongst the stalls, taking in the brightly patterned apparel, handmade trinkets, local shell jewellery and fresh produce that is proudly on display.

Arrive this morning on the Tami Islands, four tiny atolls situated seven miles off the Huon Peninsula with around 400 inhabitants. As you arrive you will be warmly welcomed by the local islanders, whose traditional dress nods to a long-standing and unique culture. See the famous wooden bowls, figure carvings and ceremonial masks from this region. Alternatively, board a Zodiac and take the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal clear waters. Afterwards, savour lunch on board as your ship sets sail this afternoon to your next incredible destination.

Take time to explore the dense, green region and learn about the local culture. Head back to your ship for a delicious lunch, during which you’ll sail a short distance to Nakwaba, a sand cay emerging from the blue waters of the lagoon. Spend the remainder of the afternoon lounging on the beach or snorkelling within the surrounding reef. Avid bird watchers may like to take a walk and hope to catch a glimpse of a variety of terns and Pacific golden plovers.
