Perhaps stroll through Thunderbird Park, with its forest of totem poles, or visit Market Square. Later, board the ferry across Georgia Strait back to Vancouver. Perhaps take a half-hour floatplane flight from Victoria to Vancouver (own expense).

Today is spent on board as you glide north through Queen Charlotte Sound. Your ship will sail past the 250-kilometre-long island of Haida Gwaii. Meaning ‘Islands of the People’, the remote archipelago is known for its strong First Nations culture, as well as its unique flora and fauna. Old-growth forests of the deepest green brush past as the frothy ocean swells and recedes beneath rocky shores. To enhance your experience, a veteran expedition team joins you on board. In some locations, they will lead exhilarating sea-level adventures by kayak and Zodiac vessels. Other times, they will host presentations and lectures on the destinations you will visit along the way.

Ringed by forested mountains on the shores of a pristine waterway bustling with ferries, fishing boats and sea planes, arrive at Ketchikan on the western side of Revillagigedo Island. Enjoy the morning and afternoon to explore at your own pace. From the waterfront, wander through the town along the wooden walkways, then take the stairs to Harbor View Park for fantastic views. While a short walk from the port reveals the world’s largest collection of totem poles. This afternoon, your ship will cruise Clarence Strait and Snow Pass.

After enjoying the scenery of Behm Narrows, your ship will enter Rudyerd Bay, one of the great bays of Misty Fjords National Monument. This breathtaking natural landscape has been carved over millennia by glaciers. Long saltwater fjords are lined by soaring cliffs and water tumbles from the sky to plunge into the icy seas below. Stand on the open bow with your naturalist guides, learning about the geology of the area. Listen for the whistles of humpback whales as they slide serenely in and out of the water.

Glide between islands towards Wrangell. A destination out of reach of large cruise ships, today this spectacular area is yours to enjoy as you wish and without the crowds. As the town is set in the heart of the Inside Passage and the Tongass National Forest, the surrounding landscapes are teeming with wildlife. Deer graze, wolves run and bears wander amidst the pines. In the afternoon, cruise through Sumner Strait and Decision Passage.

Sitka emerges between shores carpeted in evergreen spruce trees. In the former historic centre of Russia’s Alaskan empire, the day is devoted to independent discoveries. Delve deeper into the town’s Russian history or wander along the scenic walking trails.

Edging further north, sail via the tidewaters and soaring cliffs of Tracy Arm fjord. Stand on the bow as you drift into silent bays, sailing close to 2,000-metre-high mountains, waterfalls and the twin Sawyer Glaciers. The fjord is ringed by the country’s largest intact coastal temperate rainforest where bears, deer and mountain goats can often be seen. Next, your ship enters Tracy Arm’s sister fjord, Endicott Arm, where a narrow channel filled with floating ice leads to Dawes Glacier.

Early this morning your captain will steer the ship past Seduction Point on Dalasuga Island. Home to a renowned hiking trail, the route takes avid walkers along beaches, across swamps, through thickets of wild strawberries, and via forests of towering Sitka spruce and birch trees. If you rise early, you may enjoy views of glaciers and even glimpse bears along the shoreline. Arrive later at the town of Haines, once a bustling frontier town during the Klondike Goldrush due to its proximity to the Chilkat River trail into the Klondike interior. During your time here today, perhaps visit Fort William Seward, a National Historic Landmark, or the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. The town of Skagway, meanwhile, is a short ferry ride away.

Today your ship slithers into Juneau, the state’s secluded capital accessible only by air or sea. Here, you’re left to decide how your day pans out. Explore the network of busy streets in the city’s centre, backdropped by tree-covered Mt Juneau and Mt Roberts. Wind along the network of stairs and walkways past colourful heritage stores and homes, or spend time by the waterfront which buzzes with ships and fishing boats at this time of the year.

Relax on board as your ship glides between the Inian Islands and the waters of Icy Strait where the Inside Passage meets the Gulf of Alaska. After lunch, dock at Icy Strait Point, set close to Alaska’s largest native Tlingit village of Hoonah. You have the remainder of the day to explore as you wish. You may like to visit the restored 1912 Alaska salmon cannery and museum, wander through dense rainforest along one of the many nature trails or taste traditional Alaskan fare at a waterside restaurant.
