This morning we step off the Magna Carta and travel through the countryside to Oxford for a tour of Christ Church, Oxford’s grandest college, with a fascinating history, including where Lewis Carrol wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We return to our barge and after lunch, cruise the Regatta Mile, where the famous five-day rowing event, a highlight on the English social calendar, which first took place in 1839. Passing through Hambledon Lock, we’ll cruise through fairytale countryside to the medieval village of Hurley. Here you’ll visit a traditional boatyard and watch the craftsmen building and restoring classic wooden craft as they have for generations, before dropping in to Ye Olde Belle, reputed to be England’s oldest inn.Daily :
Dating back to 1666, Cliveden was once owned by the aristocratic Astor family. Enjoy a tour of the magnificent gardens which include a parterre, Chinese water garden and topiary, before being invited inside the main house where you’ll be served a traditional afternoon tea and be entertained with a ‘butler’s talk’. Your butler will reveal all the secrets and scandals of Cliveden’s history including its intriguing role in the Profumo affair.
This morning the Magna Carta continues along the Thames, past the riverside towns of Marlow, Bourne End before entering into the spectacular Clivedon reach where we have special permission to moor at Cliveden house itself. After spending time at the grand manor, you’ll cruise on this afternoon to the picturesque village of Cookham, where the Magna Carta will moor for the night.Daily :
Spend time in the village that Sir Stanley Spencer, one of England’s most famous artists described as ‘Heaven on Earth’. Much of his work was painted in and around the village. Visit his gallery and view some of his paintings. This afternoon we cruise though Maidenhead and Boulters Lock, past fabulous waterside homes in Bray and down to the heart of Windsor. Here you’ll enjoy a visit and private tour of Dorney Court, owned by the Palmer family for more than 13 generations. King Henry VIII has stayed here and the manor is regularly used for filming including Poirot and more recently The Other Boleyn Girl.Daily :
