These unique formations are concretions that formed in ancient sea floor sediments around 60 million years ago. Some of these incredible boulders are up to three metres in diameter and along the rugged shoreline, the smooth erosion of the near perfect spheres is breathtaking. According to Māori legend, the boulders are gourds, kumaras and eel baskets that washed ashore after the legendary voyaging canoe, Araiteuru, was wrecked upon landing in New Zealand hundreds of years ago.
