A Day of Small Ship Cruising

Imagine waking every morning to new adventures. On an APT Small Ship Expedition Cruise, with each day you will rise to discover a remote island or to enjoy magnificent coastline views.

Mornings have a particular buzz on an expedition cruise ship as everyone is waking up for the day, ripe with anticipation for what lies ahead. With just 99 passengers and crew on board, the excitement between like-minded guests creates a convivial ambience. Fuelled by a first-rate breakfast, hear the morning’s schedule from your expedition team, experts from different backgrounds who have a shared love and local insight for the locations you visit.

Caledonian Sky Zodiac

Our small ship, the MS Caledonian Sky, carries a fleet of inflatable Zodiac vessels to get you close to the action and nearer to stunning destinations at sea level that larger ships cannot access. Your expedition team bring these lesser-known locations to life, while ensuring your safety, comfort and enjoyment at all times.
Active mornings allow you to hop in these Zodiacs to explore hidden coves or offshore islands full of otherworldly scenery, rich in Indigenous and European history. From the majestic beauty of the Limestone Coast on the 12-Day Tasmania & South Australia Expedition to the dramatic and wild scenery on the 17-day journey of the Sub-Antarctic islands, watch as nature indulges you with its raw beauty.
Port Arthur Penitentiary Building

On our Tasmania small ship expedition cruise, you will travel by Zodiac to Port Arthur penal settlement for a full day exploration of this historic site. There is high Zodiac activity on our Auckland to Queenstown cruise, where expedition teams take you to explore Macquarie Island, the islands of The Snares and remote landing sites at Doubtful and Dusky sounds. Explore the wilderness with on-board naturalists, and spot animals native to the islands such as the endemic Snare penguins and Buller’s albatrosses.
The interaction you have from seeing these remote locations in such close proximity, zipping along in Zodiacs, is a complete contrast to glimpses you might catch while flying over these locations. Instead of a fleeting view from above, you can fully immerse yourself in your surroundings at ground level, to pause and get pulled along organically in your Zodiac by the water. What makes this experience so special is feeling how quickly you move when the engine’s turned off, revealing the power of nature.
Remote coastal view across a beach, Port Lincoln

The afternoons are spent wandering through remote subantarctic island towns on Stewart Island, Ulva Island and Macquarie Island, or port towns on the Hobart to Adelaide journey such as Port Davey, Burnie and Port Lincoln. You can take guided walks, visit shops and museums, and in Port Lincoln the option to take a shark cage dive or swim with sea lions is an exciting alternative.
Once you are back aboard the MS Caledonian Sky, unwind on the Promenade Deck or in the Panorama lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows. Alternatively retreat to your accommodation; a range of elegant staterooms with ocean views, en suite bathrooms and climate control. There is also a library on board if you prefer getting lost in a book or accessing the internet to update your loved ones at home on the latest day’s discoveries. It’s a great way to spend full days at sea, combined with relaxing on the stylish Lido deck, a complimentary drink in hand and camera at the ready to capture the surrounding scenery

The evening is yours to enjoy. As the sun sets, kick back with your favourite drink, a decadent meal and relish the outdoor dining area’s all-inclusive lifestyle when weather permits. There are welcome and farewell dinners to make connections with newfound friends or to toast the journey’s adventures. On our subantarctic islands cruise, enjoy Christmas entertainment, festive feasts and New Year with special celebrations on board.
Once your expedition ship docks for the final time, disembark with a wealth of knowledge, experiences and memories to treasure which APT’s Small Ship Expedition cruises are sure to deliver. Secure your place on the 12-Day Tasmania & South Australia Expedition or the 17-Day Subantarctic Islands Expedition for your chance to see extraordinary wildlife and untamed beauty.
