Life on the Kimberley Plateau

In this article, Kimberley-based photographer Gary Annett shares his stories about life in this incredible region, from the Mitchell Plateau to the Bungle Bungles.

Part-time photographer, part-time tour guide, Gary Annett lives and breathes all things Kimberley. We catch up with him to see what life is like in this incredible region.

 

What brought you to the Kimberley and how long have you been there?

I moved to Broome in 2013 after several years working in the photography industry in Melbourne. I loved Melbourne but was I ready for a change of scenery and ready to tackle a new challenge. That’s when I joined APT, initially as a wilderness lodge manager living on the Gibb River Road, before moving into tour guiding.

What does a typical day in the Kimberley look like for you? 

A typical day in the Kimberley as a tour guide involves getting up with the birds and taking groups of 20 people to see some of the biggest attractions in the Kimberley. Truth is, no two days are the same. Our 15-day tours take us from one spectacular location to another with lots of laughs, lots of silliness and a few stories along the way. When I’m not on the road tour guiding I try to spend as much time as possible out there photographing the Kimberley and sleeping under those big starry skies. 

 

Where is your favourite Kimberley location?

The Mitchell Plateau in the far north-west Kimberley epitomises the remoteness and the unspoiled beauty that comes to mind when we think of the Kimberley. Having lived on the Mitchell Plateau for the last three months as a wet season caretaker I have fallen in love with the place. Being able to revisit places like Mitchell Falls/Punamii-Uunpuu and watch them change as the wet season progresses has been an absolute privilege. 

 

What do you think makes the Kimberley region so unique?

There’s something about the place that gets under your skin. As well as the beautiful waterfalls and ancient sandstone gorges there’s a certain magic to the place that is very difficult to describe. It’s that feeling you get when you sit under a perfect night sky, or you watch the sunset over the Bungle Bungle Range, that reminds me time and again that unspoiled wilderness regions like the Kimberley really are good for the soul. 

 

What is your favourite image of the Kimberley that you’ve taken?

I have always wanted to see Mitchell Falls during the wet season and to experience the power and the noise of the falls in full flow. The image below is one of my favourites for exactly that reason, taken at sunset shortly after some heavy rain and flooding.
