North America’s Most Iconic Train Journeys

Experience luxury rail travel through America and Canada

To paraphrase American writer Paul Theroux, if the train journey is good enough, you don’t need a destination. That’s because there is no better window from which to watch the world go by than the window of a train. APT is all aboard with this sentiment as illustrated in its range of luxury North American rail tours, which include journeys aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian Rockies and the American Southwest.

APT has enjoyed a partnership with the iconic Rocky Mountaineer since 2001, and as an APT guest aboard the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada, you will understand why our partnered tours have been so popular for over two decades. Step onboard and enjoy the line’s luxurious GoldLeaf Service. Sink into your reclining leather chair and soak up the incredible Canadian Rockies with unobstructed views from oversized windows in the upper level of a bi-level, glass-domed carriage while onboard hosts share stories about the passing scenery and take care of your every need.

The Rockies will look just as resplendent from the lower-level dining car, where you'll savour delicious breakfasts and elegant lunches made with fresh, local ingredients, skilfully designed by executive chefs. Enjoy your choice of alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages, which flow freely throughout your journey. GoldLeaf carriages also include an outdoor viewing platform. “When a guest boards the train, we work to exceed expectations through our service, from fine dining to entertaining storytelling by our onboard hosts,” Rocky Mountaineer’s Wendy McMichael told APT.

You will spend two full days on the Rocky Mountaineer, travelling around 450 kilometres each day, all in daylight on routes like the captivating 'First Passage Through the West', which is included on a number of APT itineraries including our ever-popular 22-day Rockies Odyssey and Alaska Cruise journey which showcases the serene beauty of Western Canada and Alaska. This legendary rail route winds through the heart of the Canadian Rockies between either Lake Louise or Banff, to Vancouver, passing spellbinding sights like the roaring Kicking Horse River and the intriguing geological formations known as hoodoos.

Then there’s the majestic views of Castle Mountain, a favourite of local artists and photographers due to its unique appearance. APT has a range of trips which feature the Rocky Mountaineer's 'Journey Through the Clouds' route, travelling either east or westbound, including our 34-day Eastern Canada, Rockies and Alaska by Sea and Land tour. This iconic route rolls through rugged, untouched British Columbia wilderness, passing forested cliffs and shimmering lakes. You'll enjoy stunning vistas of the Coast Mountains, Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies and Fraser Canyon with its winding river, and the cascading Pyramid Falls.

Just don’t forget your camera!
