The APT Travel Group acquires majority stake in Murray River Paddlesteamers.

Australian travel icon deepens domestic investment ahead of centenary in 2027

The APT Travel Group, one of Australia's most successful travel companies, today announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Murray River Paddlesteamers, the Echuca-based operator of three authentic wood-fired paddlesteamers on the Murray River.

The acquisition strengthens the group's commitment to Australian domestic travel, bringing one of the country's most iconic inland waterways into a portfolio that already spans river cruising, ocean voyages, and land touring — including its luxury Kimberley lodge operations — and adds a truly unique mode of travel to The APT Travel Group family.

Murray River Paddlesteamers operates three vessels from Echuca, Victoria: the century-old PS Canberra, restored to steam in 2003; PS Emmylou, the world's only wood-fired paddlesteamer offering overnight cruises; and the PS Australian Star, Australia's first five-star paddlesteamer due to commence later this year.

The APT Travel Group’s CEO David Cox said the acquisition was a natural fit for a company approaching its 100th year.

"As we near our centenary in 2027, this acquisition speaks to everything The APT Travel Group is about. Looking to the future with a nod to the past, investing in Australian local tourism and giving our guests access to experiences that are truly one of a kind," he said.

"The Murray River is woven into this country's history, and for us to now be custodians of vessels that keep that history alive is something we're very proud of. After nearly a hundred years of delivering exceptional experiences to travellers around the world, we can't wait to bring more of that same standard to our own backyard."

Craig Burgess, Director of Murray River Paddlesteamers, said the partnership marked an exciting new chapter for the business.

"For more than two decades, Murray River Paddlesteamers has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of the Murray River. The APT Travel Group provides the resources, expertise and long-term vision to secure that legacy for future generations."

The Murray River holds a unique place in Australia's cultural and commercial history. At its trading peak, the Port of Echuca hosted more than 240 river vessels, making it the largest inland port in the country. Today, paddlesteamers on the Murray remain among Australia's most distinctive travel experiences, attracting domestic and international visitors alike.

Craig Burgess will continue to lead Murray River Paddlesteamers, with APT Travel Group's backing providing a strong foundation for the next chapter of the business.

"APT shares our commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences and investing in Australian tourism. Together, we will continue to grow river cruising on the Murray while maintaining the authenticity and heritage that make these vessels so special."
