The Bay of Islands
History and natural beauty meet at the Bay of Islands, in New Zealand’s far north. Here the Treaty between the Maori and the British Crown was signed. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, known as the birthplace of the nation, then explore the coastal delights of the region and do a little nature-spotting with a cruise to Cape Brett and the iconic Hole in the Rock.
Rotorua
Maori culture is at its most powerful in Rotorua, known for the towering geysers and bubbling mud pools created by its geothermal activity. Queenstown​
Queenstown is well known as one of the adventure capitals of the world, but it's also bursting with relaxing activities. You can enjoy a cruise on the steamship TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu or a ride on the Skyline gondola to Bob’s Peak for an amazing panoramic view of the city, lake and mountains.
Fiordland
The staggering landscape of Milford Sound – cliffs tumbling into the sea, towering snow-dusted peaks, countless waterfalls – is the undoubted highlight of the southwest of the South Island, and a cruise there is unmissable. The wildlife (penguins, seals, dolphins, birds) is also memorable. But the region has other stunning sights, including glacier country, Lake Te Anau, and the scenic highways that traverse the mountain passes.
Waitomo Caves
New Zealand’s clear night skies are a wonder in themselves, but the ‘stars’ you can see deep in the Waitomo Caves are a celestial display of another kind altogether. Thousands of tiny, luminescent glow worms create a magical sight on the ceiling of the caves, and they are memorably viewed from a guided boat gliding through a grotto.
Interislander Ferry
The journey is a highlight in itself when you cruise between the North and South islands of New Zealand. Crossing Cook Strait between the capital city, Wellington, and Picton, in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds region, the ferry offers wonderful views, from Wellington Harbour through to the sheltered waterways of the sounds.
